The symbology and philosophical references are almost overwhelming, so I just make it part of my continuing journey. Many of the books will give you a few paragraphs of explanation at the beginning of the Poomsae to set the “tone” or mindset for what the philosophical Poomsae represents. Those 4 symbols on the Korean flag are not Hangul, but Chinese Divination symbols (more explained in The Book of Changes). Beginning/Heaven, Earth, Fire, Water, etc. Doug Cook has a great Facebook website (and web blog) with more information and I always enjoying seeing his postings.Īlso, each of the TKD Kukkiwon Poomsae Taegeuk 1-8 have a divination symbol (4 of which are shown on the Korean Flag, Taegeuk Gi). I’m also pursuing the philosophical side, so I appreciate reference list. If you’re only looking for a Poomsae reference and don’t want to spend $$$ on the 5 textbook series, this book is highly recommended. However, I found “The Explanation of Official TaeKwonDo Poomsae II” by Ikpil Kang on eBay the other day. I have the TKD Textbook, and the new KUKKIWON 5 text series (both are outstanding). Announcing upcoming tournaments is also permitted.
